Bachelor of Teaching (BTchg)
Hastings Girls' High
Former Hastings Girls' High student Ellen Mountcastle says she feels right at home studying at the University of Waikato.
Ellen always knew she wanted to be a teacher and “with a teaching degree so widely recognised and taught in a city not too big or far away from home”, Waikato was the perfect option.
When she discovered the three year BTchg degree at the University of Waikato had an emphasis on practical learning, she thought it was a great chance to get the most out of her study.
“I didn’t want to sit in a room with 300 other people and be lectured at, I wanted to learn how to teach and Waikato does just that” she says.
Ellen received a $3000 University of Waikato Merit Scholarship, thanks to her NCEA results, which she put towards her accommodation fees in her first year.
“The first year of uni is already a shock to the system and that money really helped take the pressure off.”
Ellen lived at College Hall and says it was an amazing way to make new friends. Now in her second year of study, Ellen aspires to become a primary school teacher and can’t wait to get in to the workforce when she graduates.
Ellen has no regrets about her decision to come to Waikato and if she could pass on any advice to her friends back home it would be to “evaluate all your study options and don’t just follow the crowd”.
