Matthew Arnott

Bachelor of Computer Graphic Design (BCGD)

Dunstan High School

Matthew says kayaking is a sport that is fuelled by adrenaline and excitement. He attended Dunstan High School in Alexandra, and has been a kayaker since he was nine. He's been to multiple international and domestic races, including Pre-World Championships which were held in Wausau Wisconsin, USA. He was ranked third in New Zealand overall in the U18 division in 2012, and he also attended the Australian Secondary Schools and Nationals competitions in Nymboida in 2011 and Tasmania in 2012. While at Dunstan High School, Matthew was a year 13 leader for school camps at Mt Aspiring, and in 2012 he coached some of the younger paddlers in his club leading up to the Secondary Schools and Nationals Championships.

Achievements

2nd NZ Open - 12/01/2014
Held at Mangahoa New New Zealand, the NZ Open is one of the biggest races we have in New Zealand. It also counts for points towards selection for the New Zealand Junior Team. This year I came second in the U23 division. I am very happy with this result and it has given me good points towards my U23 Junior Team Selection.

14th ECA Junior Cup - 20/07/2013
The ECA Junior cup consisted of multiple different races, of which I attended the race in Solkan, Nova Gorica, and the race in Krakow, Poland. These were great races for me to compete in because they helped improve some more of my technique just before Junior World Champs and gave me a chance to adjust to the water.

Junior World Champs - 20/07/2013
This year I competed in the Junior World Championships which were held in Liptovsky Mikulas. There were over 500 athletes competing in the event which meant it was the biggest race ever held by ICF. I finished up 59th, I was hoping to make top 30's but I will get another opportunity if I qualify again next year when the Junior worlds will be held in Sydney. It was an event I learnt a lot from and it has been a great opportunity for me to build up for next years season, which I am looking forward to.

3rd at National Champs - 31/03/2013
On the 30 and 31st March I competed in the New Zealand National Champs for Canoe Slalom which was held in held in Kawerau, Bay of Plenty. There were multiple international competitors mainly from Australia. I was very happy with this result and it helped provide me with some more skills to work on leading up to World Champs which will be held in June/July in Liptovsky Mikulas.
