Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS)
St Peter's School
Matthew Dunham has been rowing for several years and has been involved in a number of regattas in New Zealand and Australia. He's won nine medals in the U17 school season, eight medals in the U18 school season, three gold medals in the U21 Youth Cup regatta, and competed in the Youth Olympic festival where he received one silver and one bronze. He attended St Peter's School in Cambridge where he was voted most inspiring athlete, most important rower, and also received the Waikato junior sports awards male rower of the year. His ultimate goal in rowing is to one day represent New Zealand at the Olympics and to bring home an Olympic gold medal.
New Zealand Club Nationals - 21/02/2015
This year I entered all heavyweight and U22 events which was great practice for me. I even managed to earn a few medals from the heavy weights too. I placed 3rd in the mens u22 single and 2nd the mens u22 quad. I am happy with both of these achievements and I am excited that still have another year of being able to race u22 events.
U23 World Rowing Championships Varase Italy - 20/07/2014
The U23 world Championships is a major event as it is the last stepping stone before competing in the elite category. The competition here is very fierce and for example the German LM2X that just won at u23's also placed 2nd at the elite world championships soon after. My doubles partner and I gave it everything we had but placed 9th in the world. It is still a great achievement for us but nevertheless we were still disappointed and wanted to see more from ourselves. Now it only fuels the fire to train harder and get ourselves up the rankings.
Nationals 2014 - 02/02/2014
For this regatta the NZ Summer Squad is split up so they row for their initial RPC's and club colours. I rowed for Waikato RPC in Cambridge Club colours and I was entered in 3 events. I raced the U22 quad with a crew of u20 lightweights just to see how well we would do in a heavyweight field. We still came 4th which was a good effort. I also did the Premier 4- as a lightweight crew which we came 4th but this was a tremendous effort for our crew especially when we were racing against the likes of Olympians such as Eric Murray. My best performance was in the Premier Lightweight single where I came 4th in a final of only professional athletes.
North Island Club Champs 2014 - 15/01/2014
At this regatta I competed in the Men's Premier lightweight single where I placed 1st after a good race. At this regatta I was rowing for the NZ Summer Squad and was the only professional rower to be entered in this event but it was still a good race with a good amount of effort put into it.
NZ Summer Squad - 19/09/2013
I have recently been accepted into the NZ summer squad which is a massive achievement for me. It is NZ's professional rowing squad over summer. Here I'll receive the best training NZ has to offer as well as train with my rowing heroes. Now I've got to work harder than I ever have before to show my competitiveness.
Uni Worlds Kazan Russia - 05/07/2013
In July I competed at the Summer University World Games for rowing. The event was far bigger than I imagined and so was the level of competition. Many countries had sent their best athletes such as their Olympic winners from the London 2012 Olympics. My doubles partner and I did not race fast enough in the heats and semis so we were only eligible for the B-final. Although this was more than annoying we raced through to win it with a faster time than 5th place in the A-final. In hindsight this was a great experience for me as it works very similar to the Olympics with there being an athlete village of 14,000 athletes and 20,000 volunteers looking after us as well as all the security to keep us safe. The event leaves me waiting for my next international regatta so I can prove myself against my competitors better next time.
NZ Uni Games - 27/04/2013
The NZ university games were held at lake Karipiro this year where all of the racing took place. At this regatta I placed 1st in the mens open weight champ 2X and mens champ open weight coxed 4+ aswell as placing 2nd in the mens champ open weight 1X. These results earned me my place in the NZ uni team that is to race in Kazan, Russia in July 2013.
Nationals - 26/02/2013
Waikato RPC did very well at the New Zealand Nationals club champs regatta down in Twizel. It was the climax regatta of the season where athletes must perform in order to earn a New Zealand trial.
Races I was entered in were the U20 single, U22 single and the lightweight double. I placed 5th in the heavyweight U20 single and placed 1st in the B-final in the heavyweight U22 single. In the lightweight double my crew placed silver at a premier level. This is one of my favourite achievements to date.
New Zealand Trials - 26/02/2013
To be selected to row in the New Zealand trials is an achievement itself. I earned my trial selection over the season competing on water. Only 10 lightweight men are selected to trial and race for the elite LW four which will race at the world champs. My progression into the elite LW four was unsuccessful but I feel honoured to have been considered to race against the best rowers in NZ. I am also proud of myself for setting a new PB for my 2km erg which is a test in the selection process.
North Island Club Champs - 08/02/2013
The North Island Club Champs is a regatta for all rowers in the north island, New Zealand. Here I competed alongside my crew in the Waikato RPC (Regional Performance Centre). Waikato RPC did very well at the regatta winning many races in many different events.
At the regatta I placed 2nd in the U20 single, 1st in the LW double and 3rd in the men's prem four.
Youth cup U21's 2012 - 20/07/2012
The U21 youth cup regatta is an international event which is held yearly in Sydney Australia. I entered and trialled as a light weight sculler to make the team. I made it through the trials as a lightweight along with the other lightweight scullers Luke Watts and Andrew Wakefield. The regatta was very successful for New Zealand rowing and was also a great start for myself as of being my first international regatta. The team came 1st overall and my crews managed to bring home a gold in the three events we entered being a lightweight double, heavyweight quad and a heavyweight eight.
