Bachelor of Music (BMus)
Matthias has been playing the cello since he was three years old. The former Wentworth College student is only 16 and follows in the footsteps of other young Waikato University musicians such as former Hillary scholar Santiago Canon-Valencia.
His talents have landed him first place in a number of prestigious competitions, including winning the National Chamber Competition in 2013 with trio Sollertinsky, and the American Protg Competition. He has also won third Prize in the Tauranga Concerto Competition, and in March competes in the National Concerto Competition.
Matthias involves himself in community and charity work, playing for charity events and partaking in a Beach Mission through his church youth group where he has been a leader in the kids programme. Last year, he was also invited to be a part of a musical seminar at the University of Fiji to demonstrate cello playing and give a lecture to the string students. In the future, Matthias hopes to be a cellist of international standard.
