Bachelor of Engineering with Honours (BE (Hons))
He lives and breathes software development and with a Golden Jubilee Scholarship from the University of Waikato, Nicholas Humphries is studying a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) specialising in software engineering.
Becoming a software engineer was an aspiration of Nick’s for most of his time at Fiordland College, where he was the head boy. He has had experience working in website development, 3D game development using Unity, desktop Java applications, native Android applications and cross-platform applications using Titanium Accelerator. In 2014 he created an app, which was the Supreme Winner in the ‘It’s My Life’ competition, to help New Zealanders quit smoking.
Attending the 2014 Australian National Youth Science Forum helped Nick define his goals. At the forum, he was exposed to leading-edge research, which has inspired him to want to work for companies such as Google, SpaceX, Martin Jetpack Company and, as an ultimate goal, Emirates Team New Zealand. Nick says these companies are on the leading-edge of research and being a software engineer to further this research is what he wants to do.
