Bachelor of Music (BMus(Hons)) and Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) Professional Performance
Karamu High School
Since coming to Waikato from Karamu High School in Hastings, I’ve had so many opportunities and I’ve grown so much as a singer, and as a person.
I first did a Bachelor of Music with honours majoring in voice, then moved on to a Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Performance because the more experiences I have and the more I learn all help me as I chase a career on the classical stage.
I’ve been lucky enough have been working with Dame Malvina Major during my time at Waikato – that’s been so important for my development as a singer – and along the way I’ve participated and won various competitions and sung at numerous important events.
I was a Dame Malvina Major Foundation Sir Howard Morrison Scholar in 2014 and 2015, and I successfully auditioned and was accepted into New Zealand Opera School Summer Programme in 2015.
It’s also been good to go home to Hawke’s Bay to perform, show them how far I’ve come in a short time and show other aspiring singers what’s possible.
We’re lucky at Waikato to have such good facilities to learn and sing in. The concert chamber in the Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts has world-class acoustics, and that’s a real bonus – not just for hearing ourselves, but we get so many world-ranked artists who come to Waikato to perform and record.
