Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS)
John Paul College
Netball is a big part of my life. So when I got a contract to play for the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic, choosing to study at the University of Waikato was a no-brainer. Also I’m a real home body, so I wanted to study somewhere that wasn’t too far away from where I grew up.
I wasn’t too sure what I wanted to study when I left school, but management seemed broad enough, with lots of pathways attached to it, so I figured I couldn’t really go wrong. The BMS also focuses a lot on working with people which is something I could definitely see myself doing in the future.
What I’ve enjoyed most about the degree are all the practical assignments I’ve done where I’ve worked in groups to bring theory to life. One example was the marketing trade show where we were given a theme and had to come up with a product to match. I also like that I can tailor my papers depending on what I’m interested in and if I change my mind, it’s pretty easy to swap things around.
My Waikato experience has been a blast so far. I made heaps of new friends in my first year living at College Hall and I know they’ll be friends for life. What topped it all off was receiving a Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship. This has given me financial support, mentoring, personal development and leadership opportunities while I study. If you excel in a sport or in the creative and performing arts, you should definitely look at applying for this scholarship.
When I finish my degree I’d love to work in marketing for a sporting organisation, but I think I’d be happy with any sports-related job.
